Deceased Name: Walter Kaner : NEWS COLUMNIST KANER DIES

FORMER DAILY NEWS columnist Walter Kaner, who more than 50 years ago started a foundation to help handicapped and disadvantaged children, has died. He was 84.

Kaner died Sunday at his home in Port Washington, L.I., after a long illness.

He worked as a restaurant critic and feature columnist for The News from 1968 to 1984. While still at The News, Kaner started the Walter Kaner Children's Foundation to help poor and handicapped kids in New York City. His organization threw an annual holiday party for kids, providing them toys and a good meal.

"It was all about the kids. That's it. That says it all about Walter," Kathy Kenny Fineman, president of Kaner's foundation, said yesterday. Kaner and his wife, Billie Elliot Kaner, who died in September, had no children of their own.

A funeral will be held at noon tomorrow at the Schwartz Brothers Funeral Home on Queens Blvd. in Kew Gardens, Queens. Burial will follow at Montefiore Cemetery in St. Albans.
